Context

The situation

A seed fund partner approached Famous with a thesis: SMBs in emerging markets were underserved by financial tooling that assumed Western banking infrastructure. The opportunity was to build a lightweight operating system — banking, payments, invoicing, and inventory — that worked with the banking rails available in CIS and APAC markets, not against them.

Challenge

Building a regulated fintech from zero in two jurisdictions simultaneously, with a target of reaching commercial scale within eighteen months. The technical, regulatory, and product challenges had to be run in parallel, not sequence — which required a studio model where brand, product, engineering, and growth were designed as an integrated programme from week one.

Strategy

One integrated build, not four sequential projects

We structured the engagement as a co-founding relationship, with Famous contributing studio capacity across all disciplines in exchange for a founding equity position. The brand, product, and growth strategies were developed in the same room, by the same team, against the same thesis — which compressed the timeline by removing handoffs entirely.

  • Equity-aligned engagement — Famous as co-founder, not vendor
  • Brand, product, and growth designed in parallel from week one
  • Regulatory strategy embedded in product architecture from the start
  • Founding team augmented with Famous engineers for the first twelve months
Execution

Memo to Series A in eighteen months

01

Validate & Brand

Market validation across three cities, followed by brand identity and naming that could operate across two cultural and linguistic contexts without localisation debt.

02

Build & Launch

Mobile app built in React Native, banking integrations with local rails in both markets, and a growth programme launched into a waitlist of 8,000 pre-qualified SMBs.

03

Scale & Raise

Post-launch growth programme across referral, content, and partnership channels. Series A fundraising narrative and materials produced alongside commercial scale.

Results

120K SMBs. Series A in eighteen months.

The venture reached 120,000 active SMBs in year two of operation. The Series A closed at a valuation 6× the seed round, with the growth trajectory and product quality cited by the lead investor as the primary factors in their decision. Famous retained its founding equity position through the round.
